Hybrid System Design & Analysis on CYME

Last update: 13/May/2026 by Di Wang

This project aims to enhance my learning and understanding on:

  • Power system design and analysis
  • CYME software

The learning note of CYME id summarized in another page.

The target of this project is designing a simple grid connected hybrid power system by applying wind turbine generator and solar PV, and analysing the power distribution through out 24 hours.

The one-line drawing of the hybrid power system is shown below:

It contains:

  • An external grid with rated 25kV line voltage
  • The wind turbine generator (WTG) can produce 120kW active power. And the long-term dynamic generation curve is modelled for this WTG:
    • The dynamic generation curve is modelled for 24hrs. For simplify purpose, there is 100% PF for every time duration with the percentage change of the power generation (more power generation during the night and early morning, and less power generation during the daytime).
    • The wind speed model is designed to be constant through out the 24 hours duration.
    • The dynamic generation curve is shown below
  • PV panel: the designed PV array has 20 panels in series and 40 panels in parallel. Based on the default PV panel configuration, the PV array can generate 75kW active power.
    • Same as the WTG, the dynamic generation curve is modelled for 24 hours. There has more power generation during the daytime reaching the peak at the noon, and no power generation during the night.
  • The Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) has rated storage energy, charging power and discharging power are 100kWh, 100kW, and 100kW separately.
  • And finally the load has 80kW and 10kVAr per phase power consumption.
  • In the entire power system configuration, the external grid acts as a balancing source, while the wind turbine generator and PV array as the main renewable energy source supplier to the load.

Simulation and analysis:

  • The first analysis should be checked is the load flow analysis, it ensures the power system is functioning properly without any alerts.
  • Secondly, to realise the simulation target, the long term dynamics analysis for 24 hrs is performed. And the results are shown below:
  • From the above results during the target 24hrs duration:
    • The solar PV array generates average 30kW power during daytime, the wind turbine generator has steady power generation around 30kW. And the external grid is importing energy from the renewable resources when there has less load usage, and it’s supplying power while the load demands more energy usage.
    • Generally, it shows a renewable resource dominated power system
    • Issue: The battery energy storage system seems to be unused. And the BESS controller can may be designed to charge the BESS when there is extra power from PV and WTG, and discharge the BESS when the load demand is increasing to reduce the grid exchange and improve the stability of the entire power grid.
